In the presentation, as part of our criteria to pass this assignment, Angelika, Manuel and myself decided to speak about post-modernism. Angelika led in with what happened in modernism and its characteristics, what it entailed and a few artists of the time. I followed in with what happened between the transitioning of modernism to post modernism focusing on psychedelia and pop art. Manuel concluded the presentation talking about artists, their work, influences and inspirations.
I started off talking about psychedelia giving examples of works found during that period and its influences now. I then did the same going on to Pop Art.
Psychedelia was a time in which Drugs were very prominent, especially LSD. Another word used for Psychedelia is 'Entheogens', meaning ''awakening the divine within''.Through Psychedelia one gets an overwhelming feel of freedom. There weren't rules which one really needed to follow, there were just common characteristics. In all psychedelic works, there is obvious improvisation. The drawings aren't very realistic and no matter what composition, shape or colour you decide to make dominant in your work, no one is going to tell you you are wrong, or that it is done incorrectly. This movement effected music, fashion art and design, and even culture. It effected so many aspects of life, it goes to show what an influential era this was. It was the era were being a hippy was cool. People dressed up with vibrant colours, had their hair in dreadlocks, even the VW camper van was prominent in this movement and is still associated to hippies till this very day.
Psychedelia is described by many as the ''conscious expression of the psychedelic experience''. Everything the artists produced seemed to be the visual they saw under the influence of the drug - tripping experience. Psychedelic works have prominent swirls, overwhelming colours and curvilinear typography. Towards the end of this movement, psychedelia was being over done and it was the excuse for any work someone produced. At that point it was said that anything psychedelic was anything which was exotic and countercutltural.
Andy Warhol was one of the most influential people during the Pop Art era. In fact when someone talks about pop art, without a doubt, they will at some point or another bring Andy Warhol into the picture as pop art is very prominent in his works. His first pieces were done on canvas but he had to stop making use of this as he was not fast enough, therefore turning to silk screening. Silk screening is a process which allows an artist/designer to repeat his patterns in one piece, but in a short time. Andy Warhol took to this technique and never let go. His works include everyday objects and famous people. When he started his collection on painting celebrities, he took a liking to Marilyn Monroe and she in fact is one of his biggest collections. He didn't just stick to these portraits but he also worked with commercial and promotional objects. One of his most famous works in regards to this field are the Campbell Soup Cans from 1962. There are a whole of 32 artworks. During their first exhibition they were placed on shelves, just like soup would be placed on a shelf at a supermarket. (Put his work into context). Some of the main characteristics which dominate his work are repetition of patterns, bright hues, and altered colours. His work is still influential to this very day, whether it is on posters, films, banners and so forth. You even find his style in the PhotoBooth effect of Apple's iMac, iPhone and MacBooks.
PICTURES I USED TO BACK UP MY INFORMATION:
MY PART OF PRESENTATION:
Looking back on the presentation at this point I feel like there are a few things that could have evidently been avoided by all parties of my group, But seeing as this is my blog post I'll focus on my part. I initially felt quite prepared for this presentation as I personally quite like the era's I spoke about. I do however wished we managed to practice it our presentation more together, however with all the deadlines concluding and living far away from each other made it a little bit difficult. I myself am a very nervous person so standing up infront of the other class (group A) - basically people I don't know - was quite nerve wrecking for me. Once I got up there I wasn't as nervous as I'd thought I would be. First of all as I said, I knew the topics I was about to present, I remembered my points and I am quite confident on the whole with my class and also get along with my teacher so at that point all was good. When reading my presentation I confused a part and with the sudden panic I feel like I kept looking back and forth at the paper in my hand to make sure I was on the right track. On the whole however I think I presented information well, looked confident and got my message through to my audience. Next time round I think better planning between the members of the group is a must, self preparation could have been better, even practicing with a family member or friend.
